Cabello Finishes Runner-Up At Kapolei Invitational

KAPOLEI, O'ahu – University of Hawai'i men's golfer Anson Cabello finished a five-way tie for second place at the 2nd annual Kapolei Invitational following Thursday's final round at the Kapolei Golf Club.

The Kahului, Maui native made a run at the title but a stretch of four bogeys over six holes on the back nine dropped him from the lead. Utah Valley's Dane Huddleston captured medalist honors at 6-under 210 while Cabello and four others were three strokes back at 3-under.

The second place finish and 213 total were career-bests for the sophomore. It was also the best finish for a Rainbow Warriors this season. Cabello got to 4-under on his round after hole 12 and had a two stroke lead until Huddleston eagled the No. 1 hole, his 13th of the day. Consecutive bogeys on Nos. 15 and 16 dropped Cabello back three strokes and Huddleston hung on for the win.

In the team standings, Miami (Ohio) captured the title and was the only school to finish under par at 7-under 857. UH was tied with Miami for the lead heading into the final round but a 299 on Thursday dropped the 'Bows 16 strokes back at 873. San Diego leapfrogged Hawai'i for second place at 870. UH was seeking its first Division I tournament win since 2004, when it captured the Turtle Bay Intercollegiate on O'ahu.

Tyler Ogawa, who was tied with Cabello at 2-under entering the day, shot a final round 78 and finished 4-over 220 and a tie for 21st place. Dane Watanabe and Josh Hayashida posted 75 and 77, respectively, to finish at 5-over 221 and a tie for 30th. James Whitworth totaled 229 and finished in a tie for 63rd place.

Four Warriors competed as individuals – Nathan Szpakowicz (73=225; t-48th), Garrett Takeuchi (74=228, t-59th), Skylor Taylor (79=231; t-68th), and Quinn Murray (79=247, 87th).

Hawai'i will next take a short flight to Maui to host the 10th annual Kā'anapali Classic Collegiate Invitational, Nov. 2-4 at the Royal Kā'anapali Course in Kā'anapali, Maui.
