Women's Volleyball Takes on UC Santa Barbara, Cal Poly

HONOLULU — Two weeks after splitting a road swing through California's Central Coast, the University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team welcomes UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly to SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center to begin the second round of Big West play and complete a three-match homestand. The Rainbow Wahine open the weekend by taking on UCSB on Friday and face Cal Poly on Saturday. Both matches are set for 7 p.m.

Join us as we welcome back Rainbow Wahine volleyball alumni as UH recognizes three-time U.S. Olympians Robyn Ah Mow and Heather Bown, who were inducted into the USA Volleyball Hall of Fame this year. Bown will be recognized during intermission following the second set for her accomplishments at UH and with the U.S. National Team … After the match, stick around for an autograph session with the Rainbow Wahine at Gate B.

'BOWS NOTES
  • UH entered the week tied with Cal Poly for second place in the Big West standings, trailing league-leader UC Davis (9-1). Cal Poly improved to 8-3 in Big West play with a sweep over UCSB on Tuesday.
  • UC Santa Barbara has won the last three meetings with UH, the latest coming on Oct. 19 in a sweep at the Thunderdome in Santa Barbara, Calif.
  • UH has won the last two meetings with Cal Poly and swept this season's first meeting on Oct. 18 in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
  • Kate Lang and Caylen Alexander claimed Big West honors on Monday after helping lead UH to wins at CSU Bakersfield on Oct. 22 and against CSUN at home on Sunday.
  • Alexander earned her fifth Big West Offensive Player of the Week award after putting away 56 kills, averaging 6.22 per set, while posting a .331 hitting percentage in UH's two wins.
  • Alexander has posted 20-plus kills in 11 matches this season. She leads the Big West and ranks third in the nation with 5.23 kills per set and 5.76 points per set.
  • Lang dished out 96 assists while posting double-doubles in both of UH's wins last wek. The senior had 52 assists and 12 digs at CSU Bakersfield. She had 44 assists and 17 digs against CSUN.
  • In Big West matches, Lang leads the conference with 11.05 assists per set and has run an attack hitting a league-high .266. Her overall average of 10.17 assists per set ranks second in the Big West.
  • Lang enters the week with 4,084 assists and 979 digs in her career and is closing in on becoming the third UH setter to post 4,000 assists and 1,000 digs. The others are Kanoe Kamana'o (6,428 assists, 1,220 digs) and Martina Cincerova (4,637, 1,111).
  • Senior libero Tayli Ikenaga had 21 digs against CSUN to move into eighth in program history with 1,183 for her career, passing Norene Iosia (2016-19, 1,175).
  • Middle blocker Jacyn Bamis ranks second in the Big West with a .387 hitting percentage in conference matches and is averaging 2.47 kills per set against Big West competition.
  • UH head coach Robyn Ah Mow earned her 100th Big West victory on Sunday, improving to 100-16 in conference matches in her eight-year career.
  • All four of this week's Big West honorees will play at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center this weekend — Alexander (Offensive), Lang (Setter), UCSB outside hitter Eva Travis (Freshman) and Cal Poly libero Elif Hurriyet (Defensive).

THE MATCHUPS
UC SANTA BARBARA
  • UCSB head coach Matt Jones is in his second season and has a career record of 37-17.
  • Jones led the Gauchos to the 2023 Big West regular-season title with a 17-1 conference record and was named Big West Coach of the Year. 
  • UCSB swept last year's series with UH and won its third straight meeting with a sweep (25-18, 25-19, 25-22) on Oct. 19 in Santa Barbara.
  • UCSB earned a sweep (25-17, 29-27, 28-26) in last year's visit to Manoa. 
  • UH earned its last win against the Gauchos on Nov. 25, 2022 in five sets in Santa Barbara. UH swept the season series that year.
  • UCSB hit .336 as a team in this season's first meeting with UH and had had three players with 10 kills; Sophie Reavis, Eva Travis and Emma McDermott.
  • UCSB entered the week on a three-game winning streak after defeating UC San Diego in four sets and Long Beach State in five last week. The run ended with a loss to Cal Poly on Tuesday.
  • Outside hitter Eva Travis leads UCSB and ranks eighth in the Big West with 3.13 kills per set. She picked up her second the Big West Freshman of the Week award of the season on Monday.
  • Middle blocker Andi Kreiling ranks third in the conference with a .350 hitting percentage.
CAL POLY
  • Cal Poly head coach Caroline Walters is in her sixth season and has a career record of 97-72.
  • UH swept Cal Poly in their first meeting of the season on Oct. 18 in San Luis Obispo, Calif., and has won four of the last five matchups.
  • The Mustangs claimed a five-set win over UH in last year's match at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.
  • Cal Poly split last week's matches with a five-set win at Long Beach State and a four-set loss to UC San Diego and entered the week tied with Hawai'i for second in the Big West standings.
  • Cal Poly was voted first in the Big West Preseason Coaches' Poll followed by Hawai'i.
  • Cal Poly ranks first in the Big West in hitting percentage (.242) and is second in kills per set (12.99), behind Hawai'i (13.55).
  • Setter Emme Bullis leads the conference with 10.51 assists per set. Bullis has earned two Big West Setter of the Week awards this season.
  • Tommi Stockham leads the Mustangs and ranks second in the Big West with 3.63 kills per set, trailing UH's Caylen Alexander.
  • Freshman libero Elif Hurriyet averages 3.47 digs per set and was named Big West Defensive Player of the Week on Monday.
  • Breklyn Pulling ranks fourth in the Big West with a .345 hitting percentage.
