SAN DIEGO, Calif.--The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team began competition in the Qualifying Rounds at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) Southwest Regionals on Thursday with matches being played at both the Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center on the campus of the University of San Diego and the Aztec Tennis Complex at San Diego State on Thursday.

At USD, UH's Sheena Masuda cruised to a straight-set win in the Round of 64 over Long Beach State's Paulina Fanco, 6-2, 6-1. Rainbow Wahine freshman Makeilah Nepomuceno put up a fight after dropping the first set, she evened the match at a set apiece against San Diego's Kristina Nordikyan, but eventually fell in three sets, 6-1, 2-6, 6-2. In the Round of 32 at USD, Masuda battled back in the second set, but fel to LMY's Fiona Arrese by a break, 6-1, 7-5.

At SDSU, Hannah Galindo powered past UC San Diego's Naomi Nguyen, 6-2, 6-2 to advance to the Round of 32 where she held off UC Santa Barbara's Carla Pacot in three sets, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3. With the win, Galindo advances to the Main Draw on Friday to face San Diego State's Vesa Ginaj.

On Friday, the doubles competition will commence at USD while the singles main draw and consolation matches will continue.
