HONOLULU--The University of Hawsai'i women's tennis team kicked off the 2024 season taking on BYU on the opening day of the Weinman Foundation Invitational on Wednesday. All nine Rainbow Wahine competed against the Cougars in either singles or doubles to start the five-day Invitational at the UH Tennis Complex.
In doubles, Hawai'i's
Anna Kern paired up the newest Rainbow Wahine Hanna Galindo to defeat BYU's Kara Wheatley and Tina Li, 6-3. The Cougars held off both
Nelly Knezkova and
Sheena Masuda's and
Ana Vilcek and
Nikola Homolkova's matches by a break. Knezkova and Masuda fell to Emilee Astle and Jacque Dunyon, 6-4 while Vilcek and Homolkova fell to Yujia Huang and Emmie Moore, 6-4.
UH was able to notch a pair of singles wins over BYU with Knezkova coming back after dropping the first set to outlast Dunyon in three, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. UH's Vilcek held off Huang in a tough straight-set battle, 6-4, 7-5.
The Weinman Foundation Invitational continues on Thursday, Jan. 4 at 9:00 a.m. at the UH Tennis Complex. The Rainbow Wahine will take on players from California and NC State.
