Men's Tennis Splits UNLV Quad Doubleheader to Notch First Win of 2024

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LAS VEGAS, Nev.--The University of Hawsai'i men's tennis team splits its doubleheader at the UNLV Quad tournament to break through in the win column on Saturday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex. The Rainbow Warriors played well in both matches, but opened the day with a heartbreaker loss to New Mexico State, 4-3. But the 'Bows battled their way back to knock of UC Riverside in a non-conference match, 4-2. UH's Quinn Snyder and Guillaume Tattevin both won both of their singles matches while doubles partners Sohta Urano and Tattevin won both of their matches as well.

Hawai'i started off strong, winning its first doubles point of the season. On the No. 3 court, UH's Karl Collins and Andrew Sommerville led off with a 6-3 win over NMSU's Patrick Lohmann and Ricardo Mercado. The Aggies evened things with Tobias Wallin and Gustavo Campos defeating UH's Andy Hernandez and Snyder, 6-3 at No. 1. UH's No. 2 duo of Tattevin and Urano clinched the point holding off Luca Fe D'osiani and Itay Feigin, 7-5.

Hawai'i took a 3-1 lead with both Snyder and Tattevin winning their matches at No. 1 and No. 3. But the Aggies rallied to win the final three matches (#2, #5, #4) to claim victory over the Warriors. In the final and most dramatic match of the day, UH's Collins fought off three match points in Set 2 and won in a second set tiebreaker, 7-6 (4). Collins took his momentum into the deciding set, racing out to a 4-2 lead and 40-15. But Gustavo Campos roared back winning five of the last six games to clinch the match, 6-4, 6-7 (4), 7-5.

Hawai'i 4, UC Riverside 2

Hawai'i took on Big West foe UC Riverside in a non-conference match to cap their Saturday doubleheader. For the second-straight match, the 'Bows won the doubles point to start things off. Tattevin and Urano led off with a 6-2 win over UCR's Aarov Sane and Ryan Huynh at No. 2. After falling on court No. 3, UH's No. 2 duo of Hernandez and Snyder secured the doubles point with a 6-3 victory over the Highlanders' Joshua Roth and Justin Lamy.

UH's No.1 Snyder swept UCR's Roth 6-3, 6-2 to give UH a 2-0 lead. But the HIghlanders then won the next two matches on No. 6 and 5 to even the match at 2-2. No. 4 Collins bounced back with a straight set win over UCR's Sane, 6-2, 7-5. Then, a day after making his 2024 debut, UH's No. 3 Tattevin clinched the match and UH's first win of the season with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-1 win over Lucas Ibarrondo Suarez.

The Rainbow Warriors will close out the UNLV Quad with a single match vs. Weber State on Sunday morning. First serve is slated for 7:30 a.m. HT at UNLV's Fertitta Tennis Complex.
