HONOLULU — The fourth-ranked University of Hawai'i women's water polo team opened the 2024 home season with a 10-6 victory against ninth ranked Princeton in the Rainbow Invitational on Friday at Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
Hawai'i senior Lucia Gomez de la Puente scored four goals, putting in three of the last four to seal the game and the Rainbow Wahine improved to 3-0. Friday's match was Princeton's season opener.
Defense proved to be the difference maker in the game as the 'Bows recorded ten steals to the Tigers' three. Freshman goalie Daisy Logtens put together another solid showing, racking up 10 saves and three steals in her home debut.
The Rainbow Wahine took a 2-0 lead less than two minutes into the match on goals by Alba Bonamusa Boix and reigning Big West Player of the Week Bia Mantellato Dias. After Princeton broke through with its first goal, Bernadette Doyle scored to give UH a 3-1 lead.
Princeton closed to 3-2 to end the first period and UH senior Lucia Gomez de la Puente opened the scoring in the second. Jordan Wedderburn's backhand goal gave UH a 5-3 lead and Lot Stertefeld lofted a deep pass to Doyle who tracked it down and scored again ahead of the Princeton defense. Gomez de La Puente's second goal gave UH a 7-4 going into halftime.
UH shut out the Tigers in the third quarter while Gomez de la Puente completed her hat trick at the 5:06 mark of the period. Gomez de la Puente took an outlet from Logtens and skipped a shot into the net to extend UH's lead to 8-4. Roni Perlman lofted a goal over the Princeton goalie just before the third quarter buzzer to give UH a 9-4 cushion.
Princeton closed to 9-6 before Gomez de la Puente fired in her fourth goal of the game sending the 'Bows into double digits. UH would continue its strong defensive performance by not allowing another goal for the remainder of the game (5:04). The Rainbow Wahine have now started four of the last six seasons at 3-0. Tonight's win over the Tigers marks the third straight victory over a top 15 opponent.
Fresno State defeated Azusa Pacific 14-8 in the first match of the Rainbow Invitational.
