FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The fourth-ranked University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team completed the two-match series sweep of Purdue Fort Wayne with a 25-19, 25-19, 25-12 victory Friday at Gates Sports Center.
The Rainbow Warriors (5-1) were led by opposite
Alaka'i Todd, who posted a career-high 16 kills, hitting .520 with one ace, three digs, and four blocks. The senior from Waimānalo, O'ahu returned to the starting lineup and recorded six kills in each of the first two sets, hitting at a .647 clip at the break.
Outside hitter
Spyros Chakas added 14 kills on .545 hitting with six digs while middles
Guilherme Voss and
Kurt Nusterer combined for seven kills and six blocks. Setter
Tread Rosenthal dished out 37 assists and directed the Warriors to .487 hitting as a team.
Mark Frazier led the Mastadons (4-3) with 10 kills and three blocks.
After starting out flat in Thursday's series opener, the Warriors looked much improved to open the match. UH surged ahead 17-12 after an ace by Todd which sparked a 6-2 run. Moments later, Todd posted back-to-back kills to make it 20-14 and the Warriors sided-out to close out the set.
With the score tied at 5-5 in Set 2, Hawai'i reeled off five of the next six points for a four-point cushion. After a Mastadon side-out, the Warriors scored three unanswered and never looked back. UH's block came alive in the set with four stuffs.
Hawai'i jumped all over the Mastadons in Set 3 for a 9-4 advantage. The lead reached double-digits at 22-10 following 6-0 run that included Todd's 16
th and final kill.
UH concludes its three-match road trip at 15
th-ranked Ball State, Sunday in Muncie, Ind. First serve is 7:00 p.m. ET (2:00 p.m. HT).
