Men’s Basketball Falls Short At UC San Diego

LA JOLLA, Calif.  —  In a game of runs, UC San Diego came out on top in a 67-61 win over Hawai'i Saturday afternoon at LionTree Arena. With their third straight road loss, the Rainbow Warriors fell to 10-9 overall and 2-5 in the Big West.

It was UH's first-ever loss to the Tritons in seven all-time meetings, including five as Big West opponents. UCSD (12-7, 6-1), meanwhile, kept pace near the top of the Big West standings, while improving to 8-1 at home this year.

In his first career start as a Rainbow Warrior, Juan Munoz finished with a team-high 21 points on 7-of-12 shooting and 5-of-8 on three-pointers. It was also a milestone day for the graduate transfer who surpassed the 1,000 point barrier for his collegiate career with his second three-pointe in the early minutes game. The native of North Carolina now has 1,017 points combined in his time at Longwood University and Hawai'i.

Despite Munoz' performance, UH couldn't overcome a season-high 20 turnovers. The 'Bows committed 14 of those in the first half to help fuel a massive 19-2 run by the Tritons that gave them a nine-point advantage at half.  UH rallied to take a brief  lead five minutes into the second half, before the Tritons surged ahead for good in the final 10 minutes.

Bryce Pope had 21 points for the Tritons, who out-scored UH 26-7 in points off turnovers. JoVon McClanahan posted 11 points and five assists while playing a team-high 33 minutes off the bench. Noel Coleman also added 11 points.

UH jumped out on the Tritons to start the game on the strength of its long-range game. The 'Bows held a 24-16 lead on a Coleman three-pointer at the 6:38 mark, the team's sixth three pointer of the game. But the Tritons went on a 19-2 run in the final six minutes of the half, including a string of 17 unanswered points, to take a 35-26 advantage into the break.

The Rainbow Warriors came out determined out of the locker room. UH went on a 14-3 run as Justin McKoy's bucket put UH back out front, 40-38, just five minutes into the second half. UC San Diego however, put together the final decisive surge of the game with a 16-4 run that gave the Tritons a 54-44 lead with six minutes left. UH cut the deficit to four points on three occasions in the waning minutes, but could get no closer.

The Rainbow Warriors now return home for a pair of games beginning with a meeting versus Big Wests preseason favorite UC Santa Barbara. Tipoff is 7:00 p.m. at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.
