HONOLULU--The University of Hawai'i tennis team (1-1) edged out Sacramento State, 4-3 to pick up their first dual match of 2024.
Nikola Homolkova clinched the the match with a straight-set victory at No. 3 on Thursday at the UH Tennis Complex.
The Rainbow Wahine started off strong, winning the doubles point for the early 1-0 lead.
Sheena Masuda and Homolkova defeated Mayya Gorburnova and Maddy Ferreros on the No. 2 court, 6-3. Playing at No. 1,
Ana Vilcek and
Nelly Knezkova held off Sacramento State's Lou Baudouin and Irene Riva, 7-5.
In singles, the Hornets' Reese Walker retired in the middle of the first set giving UH's Masuda the win. After a loss at No. 6, Hawai'i rookie Knezkova cruised past SAC's Maddy Ferreros, 6-2, 6-1 to give UH a 3-1 lead. Later, Hawai'i's Homolkova held on in a second set tie-breaker to sweep Sacramento State's Walker, 6-3, 7-6 (3). UH's Vilcek and SAC's Mayya Gorburnova were knotted in a marathon battle at No. 1. Gorbunova came out on top with a three-set win, 4-6, 7-6(3), 6-3 to close out the match.
The Rainbow Wahine will have a day off before squaring off against Washington (1-0) on Saturday, Jan. 20 at 11:00 a.m. HT at the UH Tennis Complex.
