HONOLULU--The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team battled, but fell to Memphis, 5-2 in both teams' opening dual match of 2024. The Tigers won the doubles point winning two by just a break then won three of the first four singles matches to clinch the win on Wednesday at the UH Tennis Complex.
Memphis held off UH on Courts 2 and 3 both by a break to notch the first point of the match. On the No. 2 court, UM's Monique Woog and Emily Meyer edged out
Sheena Masuda and Nikola Homokova, 6-4, while UH's No. 3 duo of
Hannah Galindo and
Anna Kern came up just short to Alice Amendola and Miriam Grossmann, 6-4.
In singles, Hawai'i took four matches to three sets winning two. UH's No. 3
Nikola Homolkova dropped her first set against UM's Meyer but came roaring back to win the final two sets to record the Rainbow Wahine's first win of the day. Homolkova was down 3-4 in the third set and then reeled off three-straight games to complete the 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 win. Reigning Big West Player of the Week
Ana Vilcek was down 5-6 in the final frame against Camila Soares on the No. 1 court. Vilcek then forced a tiebreaker after knotting the score at 6-6 and held off Soares for the win, 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (4). Both
Nelly Knezkova and Hanna Galindo saw their first collegiate matches go to three sets. No. 2 Knezkova fell in her first set but fought her way back to even the match winning Set 2 win but fell in three, 2-6, 6-4, 0-6. Galindo held her own at No. 6 against Memphis' Micah Pierce, 6-1, 3-6, 5-7.
No rest for UH as they will take on Sacramento State on Thursday, Jan. 18 at 2:30 p.m. HT at the UH Tennis Complex.
