Akana Equals Best Round At PGA Tour Event

HONOLULU – University of Hawai'i golfer Blaze Akana carded a second round 1-over 71 Friday at the Sony Open in Hawai'i, equaling his best round at a PGA Tour event.

Akana posted three birdies, including on his final hole, to finish at 10-over 150 (79-71) but missed the cut for the second straight year.

The Honolulu native was among several golfers whose first round was suspended due to darkness. He finished up his final two holes Friday morning before teeing off for his second round. Akana struggled with the wind on Thursday for an opening round 9-over 79 that included 10 bogeys and one birdie.

The Rainbow Warrior senior qualified for the tournament for the second consecutive year after winning a local qualifier for Hawai'i's top amateurs last November. Akana carded a 3-over 143 (71-72) at last year's Sony Open.

The Kamehameha Schools-Kapālama alum was the first UH golfer to compete in the Sony Open since David Saka in 2011. He was looking to become the first to make the cut at a professional event.

Akana currently leads the Rainbow Warriors with a 70.67 scoring average this season, shooting under par in five of 12 rounds including three in the 60s. The spring schedule begins Feb. 8-10 with the Amer Ari Intercollegiate in Waimea, Hawai'i.
