Rainbow Warriors Host Stanford In Home Opener On Friday

HONOLULU – After opening the 2023 season on the road last week at Vanderbilt, the University of Hawai'i football team returns to Honolulu for its home opener against the Pac-12's Stanford Cardinal, Friday, Sept. 1 in a nationally televised game on CBS Sports Network. Kickoff is 5:00 p.m. at Clarence T.C. Ching Complex. The Rainbow Warriors (0-1) dropped their season-opener last week in a thrilling 35-28 contest which UH unveiled their new Run-and-Shoot offense that generated 351 passing yards.

GAME DAY PROMOTIONS
  • It's Family Reunion Weekend as we welcome back the legendary Satele family to campus to visit with fans and be honored at the "Legends" tent located on the Mauka Sideline during the pregame and on the field in the first quarter.
  • Friday's game will be sponsored by Bank of Hawaii as they'll be located inside of Gate 1B handing out a limited number of clear bags and temporary face Tattoos.
  • Gates will open at 3 p.m. for "Kickoff at the Les" with live music and a DJ, concessions, a Heineken Beer Garden, Keiki Zone, along with multiple vendors for a carnival-like layout on the field. 
  • Students entering the facility will be directed to Gate 7, as they'll be scanned in for free with their QR code on the H Rewards app. The first 1,000 students will be given an official white #BRADDAHHOOD lanyard, and schedule card. 
  • ALL FANS ARE ENCOURAGED TO WEAR WHITE ALONG WITH THE TEAM TO CREATE A TRUE HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE!

GAME STORYLINES
  • UH will play its home opener this Friday against Stanford in a nationally televised match-up on CBS Sports Network.
  • Stanford leads the series, 3-0, with all three previous meetings held at Honolulu Stadium.
  • The teams last met, Dec. 2, 1972 to close out the season with the Cardinal winning, 39-7. UH, which was ranked as high as No. 9 in the UPI Coaches College Division poll that season, finished with an 8-3 record.
  • The series began in 1946, UH's first football season following World War II and first season in the NCAA. Stanford won 18-7, handing Hawai'i one of only two losses that season.
  • The teams met in the 1950 Pineapple Bowl on Jan. 2. The Cardinal won 74-20, which is the second most points surrendered by a UH team in program history.
  • Hawai'i holds a 32-64 (.333) record against current members of the Pac-12 conference.
  • This year marks the second time in the last three seasons that UH will play two Pac-12 teams in the same season. Hawai'i will travel to Oregon on Sept. 16.
  • Of UH's 12 wins over Power 5 teams since 2003, eight have come against Pac-12 opponents.
  • UH's last win over a Power 5 team was against Oregon State in 2019 at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu. Hawai'i also opened that season with a home win over Arizona at Aloha Stadium.
  • UH has won its last three home games against Pac-12 teams dating back to 2015. In addition to the wins over Oregon State and Arizona in 2019, the Warriors also defeated Colorado to open the 2015 campaign.
  • UH will host a non-Saturday home game for the first time since that 2015 season-opener against Colorado.
  • First-year Stanford head coach Troy Taylor spent the past three seasons at Sacramento State, where he compiled a 30-8 record and three Big Sky titles.
  • Taylor and UH defensive line coach Eti Ena, were on the same staff at Eastern Washington in 2016. Taylor was passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach while Ena coached the defensive ends.
  • During the off-season, the seating capacity of Clarence T.C. Ching Complex increased from 9,000 to 15,000 and Aloha Stadium's 75-foot scoreboard was relocated to the Diamond Head end of the facility.
  • UH had won six straight home openers prior to last season's loss to Vanderbilt.
  • UH has lost its last seven games on national television dating back to 2021. Its last win was  at home against Fresno State in 2021 on CBS Sports Network.
  • UH is coming off a season-opening 35-28 loss at Vanderbilt last week in one of six Week 0 games.
