SEATTLE – Hawai'i sophomore left-handed pitcher
Harry Gustin was selected in the 18th round of the MLB Draft by the San Diego Padres Tuesday.
Gustin was taken by the Padres with the 551st overall pick in the draft, marking the seventh straight year that a Rainbow Warrior player has been selected in the MLB Draft. He's the 108th all-time draft pick in the modern era of the program (since 1971).
A first-team All-Big West selection in 2023, Gustin led the team with 79 strikeouts over a team-high 77.1 innings pitched. He locked down the Friday night starter role, starting 14 games and appearing in 15 and finished ninth in the conference in strikeouts and seventh with a 3.14 ERA, while his 28 runs allowed were the second-fewest in the league among pitchers with at least 70.0 innings.
The Rainbow Warriors went 10-4 this year in games he started, while his ERA of 2.62 in Big West play was fifth in the league and third among starters. He pitched at least five innings in each of his final eight starts and in 11 of 14 overall while also posting a 2.57 ERA with 38 strikeouts over 35.0 innings in his final six starts at home.
Gustin has two years of eligibility remaining and owns a 3.90 ERA over his first two seasons at Hawai'i with 94 strikeouts over 94.2 career innings pitched.
