IRVINE, Calif.—The Big West announced its all-conference awards for women's tennis as voted on by the league coaches. After guiding the Rainbow Wahine to both the regular season and BW Championship tourney titles, Hawai'i head coach
Jun Hernandez was voted Coach of the Year. In singles
Nikola Homolkova and
Ana Vilcek earned All-Big West First Team honors while
Satsuki Takamura nabbed Second Team honors. Two of UH's doubles teams earned honorable mention honors—Homolkova/Vilcek and
Klara Novakova/
Rita Pinto.
It is Hernandez's third Big West Coach of the Year award. He won back-to-back Coach of the Year honors in 2017 and '18. This season, Hernandez led UH to a 14-7 overall record and a league best 8-1 conference record. Hawai'i has won 11 of its last 12 matches with their only loss in that span coming to 26
th-ranked USC. Except for the two COVID-19 shortened seasons, Hernandez has led UH to eight-straight seasons with double-digit wins, except for the two COVID-19 shortened seasons.
Homolkova's was a major contributor in her first year at Hawai'i. She has twice earned All-Big West singles first team honors—one last year at Long Beach State and this year as a Rainbow Wahine. This season at UH, the native of Pelhrimov, Czech Republic recorded an 10-8 overall record but was nearly perfect in conference going 7-1 in the Big West. In doubles, she and Vilcek joined forces in the middle of the season and ended the year with an 8-4 record.
Vilcek, a sophomore southpaw from Pancevo, Serbia, was solid playing at the top of the lineup, posting a 14-5 overall and 6-2 conference record and went 10-4 playing at No. 1 this season. She had a nine-match win streak from Jan. 19 – March 23. Her three-set win against Cal Poly in the Big West Championship match clinched the title for UH. Last year, Vilcek earned BW honorable mention honors.
Takamura, a senior from Saitama, Japan, finished the season strong, winning 10 of her last 11 matches. For the season, she recorded a team-best overall record of 15-5 and a 8-1 mark in conference. She went 12-3 on the No. 3 court. After earned honorable mention honors in singles in both 2021 and '22, Takamura was voted to the All-BW Second Team.
Freshman Novakova and senior transfer Pinto joined Homolkova/Vilcek as honorable mention awardees in doubles. The duo primarily played on the No. 1 court, went 7-7 overall, but
