Late Rally Downs Rainbow Warriors

HONOLULU – The Hawai'i baseball team had CSU Bakersfield down to its final strike on Friday at Les Murakami Stadium but ultimately fell, 3-2, in game two of the series.

After two quick outs to start the ninth, reliever Harrison Bodendorf surrendered a hit by pitch and gave way to Connor Harrison with two outs and a runner on first. A single and an error followed to load the bases for James Bell, who took a 1-2 pitch the other way for a two-run single, putting the Roadrunners in front by one.

The Rainbow Warriors (13-12, 3-5 Big West) got the scoring started, plating a pair of runs in the second inning. Dallas Duarte set the table with a one-out double to left field before a CSUB error put runners on first and second. Sean Rimmer drove in Duarte with a single to left field to make it 1-0 and Naighel Ali'i Calderon followed one batter later with an RBI single of his own to give UH a 2-0 lead.

Bakersfield (12-16, 3-8 Big West) cut the lead in half, scoring once in the top of the third to make it 2-1 but the 'Bows avoided further damage when Jordan Donahue back-doored a runner at third base to end the frame and strand two.

Bodendorf four strong innings in relief of UH starter Randy Abshier, striking out three and allowing just three hits and one run, none earned. Abshier turned in another solid start, striking out seven over 4.2 innings while giving up just one run on three hits.

Calderon drove in a run for the fourth straight game, finishing 1-for-3 with his RBI single in the second inning. A day after having his 15-game hitting streak snapped, Kyson Donahue turned in his 10th multi-hit game of the season finishing 2-for-3.

The two teams conclude their series Saturday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. at Les Murakami Stadium.
