Late Run Helps Baseball Take Finale vs. CSUB

HONOLULU – Behind a strong combined effort on the mound and some timely hitting, the Hawai'i baseball team snapped its three-game losing streak with a 3-2 win over CSU Bakersfield in Saturday's series finale at Les Murakami Stadium.

Four Rainbow Warrior pitchers combined to hold the Roadrunners to two runs while scattering nine hits and striking out seven. Alex Giroux worked the first three innings before Dalton Renne, Connor Harrison and Tyler Dyball pitched two each, with Dyball picking up the win after shutting CSUB (12-17, 3-9 Big West) out over the final two frames. Additionally, Stone Miyao went 4-for-4 with a run scored to turn in his second four-hit game of the year.

Hawai'i (14-12, 4-5 Big West) scored the deciding run in the bottom of the eighth inning. After Aaron Ujimori and Miyao each singled to put runners on first and third with one out, Matthew Miura hit a bouncer to short that had the potential to be a double play ball but was booted to allow pinch-runner Zach Storbakken to score from third. Dyball then finished things off in the ninth, working around a one-out walk to help UH avoid the sweep.

For the second straight day the 'Bows got on the board first, scoring a run in the first inning. After Dallas Duarte was hit by a pitch and Kyson Donahue doubled off the top of the wall in right center, Matt Wong plated Duarte with a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0. CSUB came right back, though, tying it in the top of the second when Konnor Palmeira delivered an RBI single.

After neither team scored over the next three frames, both struck for a run in the sixth. Bakersfield took the lead on a two-out single in the top of the inning before the 'Bows responded with a two-out run of their own in the bottom half. UH strung together three-straight singles with two outs, as Miyao and Miura delivered base knocks before Jared Quandt cashed in Miyao with a single of his own.

Duarte's hit by pitch in the first inning was the 34th of his career and he currently sits in third place on the UH career HBP list. Additionally, Miyao's four-hit game marked the fifth time this year that a Hawai'i player has had at least four hits in a game with Wong owning two four-hit performances and Duarte a five-hit game.

The Rainbow Warriors continue their homestand with a three-game series vs. Big West leader UC San Diego beginning Friday at 6:35 p.m. at Les Murakami Stadium.
