The University of Hawai'i men's golf team heads to the California desert for the Big West Championship, which runs Sunday, April 30 through Tuesday, May 2 at the La Quinta Country Club in La Quinta, Calif.
The Rainbow Warriors are seeded sixth in the nine-team tournament. Long Beach State is the top seed followed by Cal State Fullerton, UC Davis, CSUN, UC Irvine, UH, Cal Poly, UC Santa Barbara, and UC Riverside. UC Davis is the defending champion.
Hawai'i will tee off Round 1 with CSUN and UCI in Sunday's opening round. The tournament runs three days – 18 holes each day – at the 7,056 -yard, par-72 course. UH finished ninth in last year's championship.
The Rainbow Warriors will send a contingent of
Atsuya Oishi,
Blaze Akana,
Josh Hayashida,
Tyler Ogawa,
Remington Hirano, and alternate
Zachary Sagayaga. Oishi, Ogawa, and Sagayaga competed in last year's championship. Ogawa placed 34
th at 228 while Oishi was one stroke behind at 229, good for a tie for 35
th. Sagayaga placed 40
th at 240.
Oishi leads UH with a 72.2 scoring average this season including a team-best 16 rounds of par or better. Akana boasts a 72.4 average with a team-best five rounds in the 60s.
UH's best finish at the Big West Championship was fifth in 2019 when the Warriors hosted the event at the Wailua Golf Course in Līhu'e, Kaua'i.
The Big West champion earns an automatic berth in the 2023 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships, and the individual medalist also earns his place in the regional field if he is not a member of the winning team. UH's last NCAA Regional appearance was 1991 while its last individual regional qualifier was Matt Kodama in 2004.
