Baseball Completes Sweep of Dirtbags

HONOLULU – Behind another impressive effort on the mound and more timely hitting, the Hawai'i baseball team finished off a weekend sweep of Long Beach State with a 4-2 win Sunday at Les Murakami Stadium.

Harrison Bodendorf, Alex Giroux and Connor Harrison combined to limit the Dirtbags to just two runs, both of which came in the ninth inning, while scattering seven hits and walking just three batters. Stone Miyao turned in a big day at the plate, driving in three runs while going 2-for-3, and Zach Storbakken recorded his third-straight multi-hit game going 2-for-4 with a run.

The Rainbow Warriors (19-13, 9-6 Big West) jumped out to an early lead, scoring in the first inning to go up 1-0. Dallas Duarte led off the game with a double after the Dirtbags left fielder stumbled on a playable fly ball, and after a couple of outs Jacob Igawa drove him in with a single to left field.

UH added to its lead in the fourth, scoring a single run to go up 2-0. Jared Quandt doubled with one out and moved to third on a Storbakken single before coming across to score on a Miyao safety squeeze.

The 'Bows added on in the sixth, using a two-out rally to stretch the lead to 4-0. Igawa walked to lead off the inning then moved to second on a Storbakken two-out base knock to bring up Miyao, who ripped one into the right center gap to plate both of them with a double.

The Dirtbags (22-15, 9-9 Big West) put up a fight in the ninth, bringing the tying run to the plate after scoring a pair of runs, but Harrison finished off the victory by coming out of the bullpen and getting a ground ball to end it.

Bodendorf got his second win of the weekend, shutting out the Dirtbags over 4.1 innings while giving up just three hits. Giroux relieved him in the fifth inning and worked the next four frames, striking out two before Harrison got the last two outs in the ninth to get his sixth save of the year.

Storbakken led the way offensively over the weekend, hitting .500 (6-for-12) with three doubles, two runs scored and an RBI. Igawa drove in a run in all three games and has now delivered an RBI in five straight games, while Miyao's three-RBI day was his second multi-RBI game of the year.

Hawai'i pitching finished the weekend with a 1.67 ERA, giving up just six runs and 15 hits, highlighted by a stretch of 19 straight innings without allowing a run from the end of Friday's game through the eighth inning Sunday.

The Rainbow Warriors will head out on the road for the next two weeks, starting with a nonconference game at Cal Baptist Tuesday at 3 p.m. HT.
