Abshier Tosses Shutout To Clinch Series

HONOLULU – Randy Abshier tossed a complete game two-hitter with nine strikeouts to lead the Hawai'i baseball team to a 2-0 win over Long Beach State to clinch the series Saturday at Les Murakami Stadium.

Abshier dominated all night long, working with multiple runners on base just once in the game, finishing with nine strikeouts and just one walk while holding the Dirtbags to two hits. The senior finished strong, retiring the final 10 batters of the game to turn in the first shutout by a Rainbow Warrior pitcher since Logan Pouelsen on March 4, 2018.

Locked in a scoreless game through six, the Hawai'i offense finally broke through in the seventh and eighth innings. Zach Storbakken put the Rainbow Warriors in front with a double down the left field line to score Ben Zeigler-Namoa, who led off the inning with a walk, to make it 1-0. Then in the eighth, Jacob Igawa provided a key insurance run with an RBI single to center field, scoring Naighel Ali'I Calderon who pinch ran for Kyson Donahue after he doubled to start the frame.

Abshier and Long Beach State starter Nico Zeglin were locked in a pitcher's duel through six, with each keeping the opposing side off the board and allowing just two hits. Abshier worked out of a two on, one out jam in the second inning while Zeglin left the bases full of 'Bows in the fourth, but beyond that both pitchers limited traffic on the bases through six.

Storbakken turned in a multi-hit game for the second straight night, finishing 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and an RBI. Igawa's RBI extended his streak to four straight games driving in a run while Zeigler-Namoa worked a pair of walks, including the one to start the seventh-inning rally.

The Rainbow Warriors conclude their series against the Dirtbags Sunday at 1:05 p.m. at Les Murakami Stadium.
