BeachBows Win Big West Tournament Opener Over Cal Poly

HONOLULU – The University of Hawaii women's beach volleyball team began its quest for a conference title with a 4-1 win over Cal Poly on the opening day of the Big West Championship at Queen's Beach.

With the win the top-seeded Rainbow Wahine (27-6) advanced to the tournament semifinals where they will next face second-seeded Long Beach State (22-14) Saturday at 9:00 a.m. The Beach blanked both Sacramento State and UC Davis, 5-0, to earn a spot in the semis.

Hosting the Big West Championship for the first time in five years, the BeachBows came out strong against Cal Poly (12-24). UH won four of its five courts in straight sets, highlighted by the No. 1 duo of Brooke Van Sickle and Kaylee Glagau who defeated Jayelin Lombard and Piper Naess 21-19, 21-15. Van Sickle and Glagau improved to a sterling 28-2 on the season.

The No. 5 pair of Chandler Cowell and Sydney Miller were also impressive with a 21-17, 21-10 win over Marina Warren and Margo Smith. The tandem moved to 18-5 together this year. UH's only loss came at the No. 2 court where Piper Ferch and Izzy Martinez out-lasted Riley Wagoner and Kylin Loker in three sets.

It was the fourth time this year UH has defeated the Mustangs (12-24). Cal Poly has won the three previous tournament titles, turning back UH each time. The Mustangs stayed alive in the double-elimination tournament with a 3-2 win over CSUN in the final match of the opening day.

The winner of Saturday morning's UH-LBSU match punches its ticket into the championship match at 1:30 p.m. UH has defeated the Beach three previous times this season, each by a close 3-2 count.
