BeachBows Complete Weekend Sweep On Senior Day

HONOLULU  — In its final regular-season home matches of the season, the No. 8 University of Hawai'i beach volleyball team defeated No. 14 Georgia State and No. 20 Arizona by identical 4-1 scores Sunday at the Clarence T.C. Ching Complex. With the wins the Rainbow Wahine completed a perfect 4-0 weekend against its ranked foes and improved to 26-6 on the season.

In the process, UH sent its six seniors - Chandler Cowell, Ilihia Huddleston, Kylin Loker, Lea Kruse, Sofia Russo and Brooke Van Sickle-- out as winners in their final appearance at the Clarence T.C. Ching Complex.

In the first match of the day UH completed its weekend sweep of Georgia State with a 4-1 win. UH won in straight sets on three courts while its lone loss of the match was a close one as Maddy Delmonte and Ayla Johnson squeaked past Sophie Buschmann and Lea Kruse 21-16, 21-23, 15-13. It was UH's third win over the Panthers (16-16) in the last two weeks.

The second match also saw UH with a 4-1 decision over Arizona. The senior Kruse and freshman Sarah Burton were paired together for the first time this year and inserted at the No. 5 flight with some impressive results. The duo steamrolled past Miranda Erro and Annie Kost 21-13, 21-14 to claim the first point of the dual and set the tone for the rest of the evening.

UH took the first three points of the dual with the pair of Huddleston and Jaime Santer earning the clincher with a three-set win over Grace Cooke and Alana Rennie. After a perfect 4-0 weekend, the duo improved to an incredible 19-2 on the season. The night was capped by a straight set win at the top of the order by the dynamic duo of Van Sickle and Kaylee Glagau who also were unblemished on the weekend and moved to a phenomenal 27-2 on the year.

The 'Bows will next turn its attention to the Big West Championship April 21-22. Hawaii hosts the tournament at Queen's Beach and will look to capture the title for the first time since 2018 which happens to be the last time UH hosted the event.
