HONOLULU – The Hawai'i baseball team used an offensive outburst to clinch a series win over UC San Diego with a 17-8 victory on Saturday night at Les Murakami Stadium.
The 'Bows (16-12, 6-5 Big West) scored a season-high 17 runs while pounding out 12 hits and taking advantage of four Triton errors to win their second in a row over the team that came into the weekend atop The Big West standings.
The Tritons (21-12, 10-4 Big West) got on the board first with a solo homer in the opening frame, but the 'Bows responded with three straight big innings in the second, third and fourth. UH scored five two-out runs in the second before striking for four more in the third and three in the fourth.
The Rainbow Warriors benefitted from a trio of walks and two hit batters in the second inning to take the lead.
Jordan Donahue drove in the first run with a single to right field before
Jared Quandt was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and
Matt Wong worked a four-pitch walk one batter later to make it 3-1.
Kyson Donahue capped off the scoring with a two-run single to right center, putting UH up 5-1 after two.
Jacob Igawa added on with one out in the third inning, finding the gap in right center for an RBI double to score
Ben Zeigler-Namoa and make it 6-1.
Matt Wong broke things open later in the inning with a bases-clearing double to right center with two away in the frame to put UH up by eight.
After UCSD answered with three runs in the fourth, Hawai'i came right back with three more in the fourth.
Dallas Duarte doubled to lead off the inning before Zeigler-Namoa worked a walk, and Igawa came up two batters later and hit an opposite field three-run homer out to right center, stretching the UH lead to 12-4.
UCSD cut into the Hawai'i lead with two runs in the sixth, but the 'Bows tacked on five runs in the seventh to go up 17-6. UH took advantage of four Triton errors in the frame, scoring runs on an fielder's choice, double, walk, error and wild pitch to bust things back open.
Randy Abshier picked up the win for the Rainbow Warriors on the mound, throwing five innings and striking out a pair.
Connor Harrison relieved him in the sixth inning and shut the Tritons out over the next 2.2 frames while giving up just two hits, before
Trevor Ichimura finished things off by working the final 1.1 innings.
The 'Bows scored 11 of their 17 runs with two outs, as seven of the nine starters recorded a hit while eight of the nine scored a run. Igawa and Wong each drove in four runs, with Igawa going 2-for-4 with a homer, double and three runs scored while Wong went 2-for-5 with a double and run scored.
Kyson Donahue also turned in a multi-RBI game, driving in three while going 2-for-5 with a double.
Jordan Donahue had a 3-for-4 day at the plate with a pair of runs scored and an RBI.
The Rainbow Warriors wrap-up the series with the Tritons on Sunday at 1:05 p.m. at Les Murakami Stadium.
