HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i women's golf team will look to capture its second straight Big West Championship this week in Las Vegas, Nev. The three-day tournament runs Sunday, April 16 through Tuesday, April 18 at the Spanish Trail Country Club.
The Rainbow Wahine enter the championship as the No. 6 seed. UH was crowned co-champion last year with Cal Poly, securing its first women's golf conference championship in program history. The Rainbow Wahine lost in a playoff to the host Mustangs, who earned the conference's automatic berth to the NCAA Championship.
Prior to last year, UH's best finish at the championship was runner-up in 2015. The Rainbow Wahine also placed third in 2017.
UH will send a contingent of six golfers –
Hyeonji Kang,
Focus Jonglikit,
Mayumi Umezu,
Wendy Song, and
Monica Johnson along with alternate
Ting-Yu Liu.
Spanish Trail Country Club will play at 6,315 yards and par 72. Tee times begin at 8:30 a.m. PT on Sunday with UH teeing off from 9:20 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Hawai'i is paired with UC Davis and UC Riverside.
Long Beach State is the highest ranked team in the field with a No. 80 ranking in Golfstate followed by defending champion Cal Poly (#95), Cal State Fullerton (#124), UCD (#126), UCR (#129), UH (#145), UC Irvine (#181), Cal State Bakersfield (#200), and CSUN (#214).
Kang was UH's top finisher at last year's championship with a tie for fourth place at 6-over 222. Johnson tied for eighth while Umezu tied for 16
th. The Rainbow Wahine held a five-stroke lead entering the final round but faltered down the stretch, combining for seven bogeys in the final four holes.
