FULLERTON, Calif. – The Hawai'i baseball team turned in another impressive offensive performance but it wasn't enough, as the 'Bows dropped the series finale at Cal State Fullerton, 12-11, on a 10th-inning walk-off homer Sunday.
Kyson Donahue put the Rainbow Warriors in front in the top of the 10th, crushing a leadoff homer into the trees beyond the right field wall on the first pitch to make it 11-10. After UH couldn't add any more in the inning, Fullerton put its leadoff runner on in the bottom half before Brendan Bobo delivered a walk-off two-run homer to right field, giving the Titans the series win.
After a scoreless first two frames, the two teams exploded offensively in the middle innings. The 'Bows struck first with three runs in the third inning, with
Kyson Donahue driving in the first with a sacrifice fly to deep center.
Ben Zeigler-Namoa then came in to score on a wild pitch before
Jacob Igawa made it 3-0 with a single.
Fullerton answered with a five-run bottom of the third but Zeigler-Namoa tied it with a two-run homer to right field in UH's next half inning.
Tai Atkins kept the Titans off the board in the fourth with an inning-ending double play, before the 'Bows struck for four runs in the fifth to jump back in front.
Dallas Duarte gave Hawai'i the lead with an RBI single to score Igawa, who led off the inning with a triple to make it 6-5.
Jared Quandt then followed with a pinch-hit RBI triple before Naighel Ali'I Calderon drove him in with a single, making it 8-5.
Jordan Donahue delivered a run-scoring single to cap off the scoring in the frame, stretching the UH lead to 9-5.
The Titans came right back with three runs in the bottom of the inning to cut the UH lead to 9-8, but Duarte came through yet again with an RBI double down the left field line to put Hawai'i up by two.
Fullerton cut the Hawai'i lead to one with a double in the seventh, before tying it up with an unearned run in the ninth to send it to extras.
The Rainbow Warrior bats were on fire again, as they matched a season-high with 19 hits for the second consecutive game. UH also pounded out eight extra-base hits with four doubles, two triples and two home runs while nine players had a hit and six turned in multi-hit games.
Duarte had a huge day at the plate, going 5-for-6 with two RBIs and two doubles. He's the first Hawai'i player to turn in a five-hit game since Daylen Calicdan on Apr. 7, 2019.
Kyson Donahue extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a double in the fifth inning, the first 15-plus game hitting streak by a Rainbow Warrior since Kekai Rios hit safely in 17 straight in 2018.
The Rainbow Warriors return home to begin a nine-game conference homestand, starting Thursday with the first of three vs. CSU Bakersfield at 6:35 p.m. at Les Murakami Stadium.
