Women’s Basketball Survives In Double-Overtime Versus Cal State Fullerton

HENDERSON, Nev. -- The No. 3 seed University of Hawaii women's basketball team began its quest for a second straight Big West Championship title with a hard-fought 82-75 double-overtime win over No. 6 seed Cal State Fullerton Wednesday night at the Dollar Loan Center.

WIth the win, the Rainbow Wahine (16-14) advanced to the tournament semifinals, where they will face No. 2 seed Long Beach State, a 55-49 quarterfinal winner over UC Riverside. The 'Bows and Beach will square off on Friday at 2:30 p.m. PT/12:30 p.m. HT.

Lily Wahinekapu led a balanced UH attack that saw eight different players in the scoring column, including four in double-digits. The sophomore guard finished with a team-best  20 points, eight rebounds, and five assists. Meilani McBee poured in 14 points, including a crucial three-pointer to force a second overtime.  Daejah Phillips finished with 13 points, while Imani Perez chipped in 11.

UH, winners of eight of its last 10 games, overcame an early 10-point deficit and battled past a scrappy Fullerton squad to move on to the Big West semifinals for the fourth straight time. In the process, they ended the season for the Titans (14-16), who they have now beaten in seven consecutive matchups, including three times this season.

The win didn't come easy, though. It was not until UH scored seven of the first nine points of double overtime and buried a bevy of free throws in the waning seconds could they take home the win.

The first half saw both teams shoot the ball well with Fullerton taking the upper hand early. The  Titans led 17-13 after the first quarter and built a 10-point advantage, 23-13, early in the second. But UH stormed back with an 18-5 run, including 10 unanswered, to reclaim the lead. UH ultimately held a 33-30 advantage going into the locker room on the strength of 52 percent shooting, including 6-of-14 on threes.

UH came out strong in the second half and led by seven 39-32 before Fullerton went on a 10-2 run to briefly take the lead. From there, it would be a tight game all the way through. UH held a two-point advantage at the beginning of the fourth quarter, but the Titans erased a four-point deficit in the final two minutes to force overtime. The 'Bows had a chance to win the game with the final possession of regulation, but McBee's three-pointer fell off the mark.

McBee would make good in the first overtime. The Titans, who trailed for the majority of the second half and beyond, put themselves in position for the upset, but McBee swished a corner three with 19 seconds left to tie the game and force a second extra period.

After Fullerton scored the first basket of double-overtime, UH reeled off the next seven points to take the lead for good. The Titans closed within one point on two occasions, including with 51 seconds left. But the 'Bows sealed the game at the free throw line, where they scored their final six points. UH finished the game 21-of-28 from the free throw line.
