BeachBows Roll On First Day Of Big West Challenge; Win Streak Now At 15

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calf. — The No. 8 University of Hawaii beach volleyball team kicked-started its longest road trip of the season by going a perfect 3-0 on day one of the Big West Challenge Saturday at the Swanson Beach Volleyball Complex on the campus of Cal Poly. UH blanked CSUN and Cal Poly, 5-0, before trimming UC Davis, 3-2 to conclude the day.

With its trio of wins, the BeachBows (17-3) extended its win streak to 15 straight matches and surpassed the 2015 squad (13) for the second-longest win streak in program history. The 2018 squad holds the school record with 32 straight wins.

In the first match of the day, UH had little trouble disposing of CSUN. The BeachBows won all five courts in straight sets with the most impressive showing coming at the No. 4 flight where Ilihia Huddleston and Jaime Santer cruised past Gaby Griego and Abbey Sweeting, 21-15, 21-9 at the No. 4 flight. UH improved to a perfect 9-0 all-time against the Matadors.

The second match saw UH take on host Cal Poly. The 'Bows defeated the Mustangs for the third time this year with a pair of courts going the distance Among them was Anna Maidment and Sofia Russo who outlasted Delaney Peranich and Brooke Golik 21-19, 22-24, 15-13 to secure the shutout. The win marked just the program's second win against the Mustangs in six matches in San Luis Obispo.

UH concluded the day with a competitive match versus UC Davis. The Aggies took the first point of the day as Mia Olen and Megan Luly snapped Maidment and Russo's seven-match win streak with a 21-18, 21-18 win at Court 3. UH claimed the next two points including a straight set win by Huddleston and Santer over Kate O'Steen and Sam Lazenby that improved Huddleston and Santer to a perfect 10-0 this year. The top two flights each went to three sets and would decide the fate of the match. Ultimately Brooke Van Sickle and Kaylee Glagau turned back Tabitha Mitchell and Finley Rollins 21-13, 17-21, 15-8 to give UH the third and clinching point. The tandem improved to 16-1 this year with its 13th straight win.

The BeachBows will continue the Big West Challenge with another trio of matches on Sunday, taking on CSU Bakersfield, Sacramento State and No. 12 Long Beach State beginning at 8:00 a.m. HT.
