Women's Tennis Defeats CSUN 5-2

HONOLULU--The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team evened its overall record at 6-6 as they snapped CSUN's nine-match win streak with a 5-2 victory on Thursday afternoon. The Rainbow Wahine improved to 3-1 in the Big West while the Matodors fell to 12-3 overall and 3-1 in conference. It marked UH's third-straight win--all in conference.

Overcast skies forced the two teams to start with singles, but thankfully the rain never came and it turned out to have clear skies in the afternoon. Hawai'i's No. 5 Rita Pinto got things started with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Vito Solis Urdiales. UH then took a 2-0 lead as No. 3 Satsuki Takamura took care of Yuliia Zhytelna in straight sets 6-3, 6-3. On the NO. 6 court, CSUN's Angela Ho then held off UH's Madison Kim by a break in both sets, 7-5, 6-4 to notch the Matadors' lone singles point. Hawai'i's 107th-ranked Ana Vilcek dropped her first set by virtue of a tie-breaker, but came back with a vengeance to defeate Jolene Coetzee at No. 1, 6-7 (4), 6-1, 6-0. At No. 4, UH's Klara Novakova clinched the match by edging out CSUN's Emma Moratalla Sanz, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(4). On the No. 2 court, in the tightest match of the day, Nikola Homolkova held offSasha Turchak, 6-7 (4), 7-5, 7-6 (6).

In doubles, CSUN's No. 1 team of Turchak and Zhytelna won the last five games leapfrogging past UH's Novakova and Pinto, 6-4. Hawai'i's No. 2 Vilcek and Homolkova defeated Solis Urdiales and O'Neill, 6-3 to even things in doubles at 1-1. But the Matdors' Ho and Tallia Harper came from behind to defeat UH's Takamura and Kim, 6-4 to capture the doubles point to finish the match with UH coming out on top, 5-2.

The Rainbow Wahine continue their final homestand of the season with a conference match against UC Santa Barbara (2-10, 2-0 BW) on Sunday, March 26 at 2:30 p.m. HT.
