Women's Tennis Comes From Behind to Turn Back Long Beach State, 4-3

Box Score LONG BEACH, Calif.—The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team (5-6, 3-1 Big West) came from behind to defeat Long Beach State on the road, 4-3 on Thursday afternoon. The Rainbow Wahine trailed 2-0 early, before reeling off four-straight singles wins, capped by Nikola Homolkova three-set victory that clinch the match at the Rhodes Tennis Center.

UH's No. 3 doubles team of Satsuki Takamura and Madison Kim nearly blanked LBSU's Sarah Medik and Mathilde Tranberg, 6-1 to start the match, it was the Beach who captured the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2. The Beach's Sheena Masuda and Justine Dondonay held off UH's Ana Vilcek and Nikola Homolkova, 6-4 and at No. 2, Rhona Cook and Peppi Ramstedgt knocked off Hawai'i's Anna Kern and Rita Pinto, 6-4 for the early 1-0 lead.

Long Beach State went up 2-0 after winning on the NO. 6 court. But then UH reeled off three-straight singles wins. 116th-ranked Vilcek dispatched LBSU's Medik in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. After a tough first set, UH's Pinto cruised in Set 2 to defeat Dondonay on the No. 5 court, 7-5, 6-1 to tie the score at 2-2. UH's No. 3 Takamura then held off Tranberg, 6-3, 7-5 to give UH a 3-2 lead with two matches to go.

With the No. 2 match tied at a set apiece, Hawai'i's Homolkova, quickly broke LBSU's Ramstedt twice to take a 4-0 lead in the deciding third set. Homolkova would clinch the match with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 win. For Homolkova, who transferred to Hawai'i from Long Beach State this season, it was a successful return to her old stomping grounds.

In what was the final match to finish, UH's No. 5 Kim dropped the first set to LBSU's Cook, but battled back to take the second set to knot the match at 1-1. In the third, the two traded blows as the set was neck and neck all the way to it being tied at 5-5 before Cook prevailed 6-3, 3-6, 7-5.
