Water Polo Closes Out Road Trip With Win Over CSUN

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The No. 5 University of Hawai'i women's water polo team took down No. 23 CSUN with a 12-3 road win Sunday to close out a successful weekend of Big West matches in southern California.

The Rainbow Wahine (13-2, 2-0 BWC) immediately took charge in the opening frame with sophomore attacker Lucia Gomez de la Puente leading the way with back-to-back-back goals for a 3-1 lead.

The 'Bows forced the Matadors into five turnovers in the second period, two of which were credited to senior defender Emma van Rossum. As defensive action continued back and forth between the two teams,  UH managed to tack on another goal for a 4-1 halftime lead.

Freshman Bia Mantellato Dias, the team's leading scorer, led the offensive onslaught in the second half with a UH power play goal to open the scoring. The Rainbow Wahine quickly followed with a double sequence of goals by senior Libby Gault for a 7-2 lead heading into the final period. UH poured it on in the final frame with five more goals with four steals.

Gomez de la Puente finished with a match-high four goals while Gault, Morgan Rios, and Cila David each chipped in with two.

With the win, Hawai'i improves its all-time road record against CSUN to 7-0.

Up next, the 'Bows will return home for a two-day series of matches, starting on Friday, March 17 at 6:00 p.m. HT against USC.
