BeachBows Claim Heineken Queen's Cup With Thrilling Win Over Cal

HONOLULU — The No. 9 University of Hawaii beach volleyball team captured the Heineken Queen's Cup with a thrilling 3-2 victory over No. 11 California Sunday at Queen's Beach. The win capped a perfect 5-0 weekend for the BeachBows (12-3) who have now rattled off 10 straight wins.

Both UH and Cal (10-3)  entered Sunday's action having won their previous four matches in the round-robin tournament, setting up a true championship match. Both teams were also riding nine-match win streaks and it would be on full display as the teams engaged in a hotly contested battle.

The teams split the first four courts with each flight decided in straight sets. The 'Bows would get their points from the No. 3 pair of Jaime Santer and Ilihia Huddleston and the No. 4 pair of Anna Maidment and Sofia Russo. Cal countered with wins at the No. 2 and No. 5 court and when  Ainsley Radell and Ashley Delgado took down Kylin Loker and Riley Wagoner, 21-14, 21-18,, the dual was knotted 2-2.

Fittingly, the game would be decided at the top of the order where Brooke Van Sickle and Kaylee Glagau and Cal's Maya Gessner and Ella Dreibholz engaged in an epic three-set match. In the third set, Cal took a commanding 10-6 and looked poised for the win. But there was no quit in Van Sickle and Glagau who claimed six of the next seven points to edge ahead, 12-11. Not until Gessner's serve went long could UH claim the come-from-behind-victory 21-11, 17-21. 15-13 win that was fueled by a 9-3 match-ending run. For her gutty performance, Glagau was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.

The BeachBows will be back in action on Tuesday, March 12 when they play their first matches of the season at Ching Complex. UH will take on Nebraska at 9 a.m. before facing Texas at 6:30 p.m. in a televised match on SpectrumSports.
