Men's Tennis Defeats UTRGV for Sixth-Straight Win

Box Score LA JOLLA, Calif.- The University of Hawai'i men's tennis team (6-3) extended their win-streak to six after notching a 6-1 win over UTRGV (Texas Rio Grande Valley) team on Saturday evening at the UC San Diego's Northview Tennis Courts. .

In the double's matches, Hawai'i's No. 3 pair of Vojta Vlkovsky and Karl Collins defeated UTRGV's Te Kani Williams and Christopher Lawrance, 6-2 to start things off. The No.2 duo of Kilian Maitre and Axel Labrunie came out on top, 6-4 over Sam Whitehead and Karlo Krolo, to clinch the doubles point. In the final double's match, UH's No. 1 team of Andre Ilagan and Lucas Labrunie were edged out by UTGRV's Emilien Burnel and Borna Devald, with a close tie-breaker that ended at 7-6 (3).

The 'Bows continued their battle, winning five out of the six singles matches against the Vaqueros. Currently ranked at No.56 in ITA rankings, UH's No. 1 Ilagan breezed past Burnel in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. Playing on the No. 3 court, Guillaume Tattevian knocked off Krolo, 6-3, 6-3 and then Maitre, playing the No. 6 singles match held off Agustin Salazar, 6-2, 7-5 to clinch the match. With the match already in hand, No. 2 Axel LaBrunie was tied at 1-1 with UTRGV's Borna Devald which forced a super tiebreaker which Labrunie came out on top, winning 10-6. Hawaii's No. 5, Lucas Labrunie capped their wingles wins with a three set win over Williams, 6-2, 1-6, 6-3.

UH originally was supposed to compete in the Golden State Invitational joint hosted by Sacramento State and UC Davis this weekend. But expected inclement weather canceled the two-day tourney. Instead the Rainbow Warriors headed south to play UTRGV today and Nevada on Monday, March 13 at 9:00 a.m. HT.
