Men’s Basketball Uses Second-Half Surge To Get Past UCSD

HONOLULU  - The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team used a inspired second-half effort to rally past UC San Diego, 69-62, Thursday night at the SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center. The Rainbow Warriors  improved to 18-7 overall and 9-4 in the Big West with their 10th win in their last 11 home games.

In a tale of two halves, the 'Bows overcame a sluggish first half with a second half that saw UH lean on its hallmark defense. It was a defense that help spur a game-changing 15-0 run and keep UH in a tie for third in the Big West standings.

Noel Coleman led UH with 19 points and five three-pointers, including four in the critical second half. Samuta Avea added 17 points with 13 of his points coming in the second half. Bernardo da Silva finished with eight points, 12 rebounds and three blocks.

The 'Bows came out flat and the Tritons took full advantage. UCSD started the game on a 17-5 run, putting UH down by a dozen just six minutes into the game. Led by Francis Nwaokorie's 18 first-half points, UCSD took a 35-29 lead at the intermission. The Tritons shot 50 percent form the floor and scored 12 points off of seven UH turnovers.

UH trailed 38-32 early in the second half when they made their game-changing spurt. The 'Bows held the Tritons scoreless for nearly nine minutes, allowing UH to score 15 unanswered points. It was part a 17-1 run that gave UH a double-digit lead. The Tritons pulled back within two points with two minutes left, but UH asnwered with an Avea three-pointer as UH scored the next five points to put the game away.

UH held the Tritons to just 31 percent shooting in the second half and limited Nwaokorie to just seven second-half points. Bryce Pope, one of the leagues top scorers at 18.6 points per game, finished with 10 points on 4-of-15 shooting.

UH also got key contributions from Harry Rouhliadeff (eight points) and Kody Williams (six points) as the UH bench out-scored the UCSD bench 14-0. The 'Bows buried 10 three-pointers on the evening and held a 16-6 advantage on second-chance points.

The Rainbow Warriors now turn their attention to Cal State Fullerton Saturday, Feb. 11. Tipoff is 7:00 p.m. at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.
