SAN DIEGO – The Hawai'i baseball team found itself facing an early deficit and couldn't respond in a 14-2 loss to San Diego to open the Tony Gwynn Legacy Friday.
San Diego (4-0-1) struck first, as Jack Costello made it 2-0 in the bottom of the first with a two-run homer to left field. The Toreros extended their lead in the third, scoring three runs to take a 5-0 lead and chase UH starter
Dalton Renne. After a walk and stolen base to start the inning, back-to-back USD singles made it 4-0 before a bloop base hit to left drove in the final run of the frame.
USD made it 6-0 in the fourth behind a solo home run, but Hawai'i (3-2) responded in the top of the fifth with their first two runs of the game.
Bronson Rivera worked a walk and
Jordan Donahue was hit by a pitch before
Ben Zeigler-Namoa came through with a single to first base that resulted in both runners scoring to make it 6-2.
The Toreros broke things open in the sixth, scoring five two-out runs to make it 11-2. The 'Bows had a chance to get out of the inning unscathed with a runner on first and two outs, but the next five USD batters reached base to open things up.
Friday's game also marked the first time since head coach
Rich Hill arrived in Mānoa that he returned to play at San Diego, the program that he led for 23 years and went to nine NCAA Tournaments with.
The Rainbow Warriors have the day off tomorrow following the schedule changes due to impending bad weather, and will next take on North Dakota State at 11 a.m. HT Sunday at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
