HONOLULU– The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team picked up its 10th Big West win by completing the season sweep of CSU Bakersfield with a 65-52 victory Monday afternoon at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.
The Rainbow Wahine (12-13, 10-6) maintained their current pace with a half-game lead over UC Davis for fourth place in the Big West standings with four games left to go in the regular season. The Roadrunners (6-18, 3-13) remain out of the cellar of the standings with a half-game lead of their own over UC Riverside despite losing six consecutive games.
UH took a slight lead into the second quarter at 18-16, but an 11-2 run midway through the frame extended the lead to its largest of the game at 30-19. The 'Bows capitalized on their final possession of the half as sophomore guard
Lily Wahinekapu took an inbounds pass with two seconds left, hitting the layup as the buzzer sounded for a 35-27 advantage.
The third quarter was a first of the season for the 'Bows as they went 0-for-11 from the floor and 9-of-10 from the free throw line. Due to the scoring drought, the 'Bows lost their lead but regained it before the end of the frame at 44-43.
Sophomore guard
Daejah Phillips found her rhythm in the fourth quarter, pacing the offense with nine of her 11 points in the final 10 minutes of action. UH went on a 12-3 run in the quarter to regain the lead after losing it in the opening seconds, building its lead to 10 at 57-47 with 3:06 in regulation. The Roadrunners stayed within striking distance, but the gap was too much as the 'Bows kept them in check in the final minutes.
Wahinekapu led the 'Bows with 16 points, tallying her 11th consecutive game of 10 points or more while hitting 11-of-14 from the free throw line and dishing out a team-high four assists. Graduate center
Kallin Spiller added 14 points of her own and a team-high eight rebounds.
UH shot a season-high 39 free attempts, and hit a season-high 31, as 53 fouls were called throughout the game.
Next up for the 'Bows is their final road trip of the regular season, as they'll visit UC Riverside on Thursday and follow it up with a trip to UC Irvine on Saturday.
