ST. GEORGE, Utah – The Hawai'i women's swimming and diving team capped off a dominant week by winning their seventh MPSF conference championship overall and sixth in the last seven years with another huge day Saturday.
The Rainbow Wahine have now won nine conference titles overall in program history after finishing the meet with 773.5 points, well clear of runner-up UC San Diego which ended the week with 604. The Rainbow Warriors finished in third place with 569.5 points, marking the seventh straight year they have finished in the top three of the league.
Laticia Transom continued her record-setting week by setting her third different school record of the meet, swimming a 47.86 in the 100 free. The senior was a part of six of the seven MPSF women's meet records set this week by the entire field and set program records in all three of her individual events.
Holly Nelson and Gabby Scudamore finished second and fourth respectively in the event, as the Wahine completed their dominance of freestyle events at the meet.
Anna Friedrich led off the final session with a victory in the 200 back, swimming a 1:57.10 to claim the league title in the event for the second time in her career. Additionally,
Dorottya Dobos came in close behind Friedrich in the 200 back to finish third, while
Mandolin Nguyen and
Kathryn Ivanov finished second and third in the 200 breaststroke.
The Wahine capped off the meet with an exclamation point, setting another school record in a runaway victory in the 400 free relay with an NCAA B cut time of 3:14.74 to win by nearly seven seconds. The squad of Nelson, Transom, Friedrich and Scudamore finished off the UH women's perfect week of relays, winning all five of those events.
The Rainbow Warriors also ended the meet strong, setting a school record in the 400 free relay with a time of 2:53.70.
Mario Surkovic,
Jordan Meacham,
Ian Venter and Tim Gallagher combined to finish third in the race, just behind BYU and UCSB.
The Hawai'i divers also finished the meet strong, as the Wahine took four of the top six spots in the platform competition while both Rainbow Warrior divers placed in the top four of their platform event.
Elma Lund led the way for the women, finishing second with a mark of 255.15 while
Juan Gonzalez paced the men, coming in third with a score of 352.30.
UH will have one final meet to try to earn NCAA cut times and diving marks at the Georgia Last Chance Meet, Feb. 25-26.
