LIHU'E, Kaua'i – The University of Hawai'i men's golf team carded a first round 288 on the opening day of the 46
th John A. Burns Intercollegiate Thursday at Ocean Course at Hokuala. Round 2 play was suspended due to darkness with every teams completing nine holes.
Due to potential heavy rains over the weekend, the teams decided to play as many holes as possible on Thursday. Brigham Young holds a one stroke lead (-23) over 19
th-ranked Arizona (-22) followed by New Mexico (-14), UTEP (-12), and Texas A&M (-11).
UH currently sits in 18
th place at +2. The Rainbow Warriors completed Round 1 in a tie for 13
th place at even par 288.
Atsuya Oishi and
Tyler Ogawa each shot 2-under 70.
Oishi is 2-under through 10 holes in his second round and 4-under for the tournament and tied for 19
th place.
Blaze Akana is 3-under in Round 2 and even par overall and tied for 52
nd place.
Zachary Sagayaga is also 3-under at the turn and 1-over through 27 holes.
Long Beach State's Ian Gilligan, the 11
th-ranked collegiate golfer, is atop the leaderboard at 11-under while New Mexico's Bastien Amat is one stroke back. Gilligan carded a first round 61, which included nine birdies and two eagles.
The participants will attempt to resume play at 8:30 a.m. on Friday although heavy rain is expected throughout the day.
