RENO, Nev. – The University of Hawai'I got back on the winning track with an emphatic 27-14 win over Nevada Saturday afternoon at Mackay Stadium. The Rainbow Warriors (3-7, 1-4) used a strong first-half performance and got contributions from all three phases to end a four-game slide and pick up its first Mountain West win of the year.
In the process UH also handed head coach Timmy Chang his first career road win at the place where he served as an assistant coach for five previous seasons. UH had dropped its last 10 road contests dating back to last year entering the game.
A week after a home shutout loss against San Jose State, the Rainbow Warriors flipped the script. UH jumped out to a 17-0 lead by the break, powered by a rejuvenated defense. UH dominated the first 30 minutes, out-gaining the Wolf Pack 230-69 in yards and holding them to just three first downs. UH also doubled up Nevada in time of possession.
The UH defense kept up the pressure in the second half. A
Peter Manuma interception and return of 24 yards, set up a UH score that put them up 24-7 at the midway point of the third quarter. Each time Nevada threatened to get back in the game, UH turned them back. The Warriors held the Wolf Pack to just 6-of-24 passing and a 3-of-14 third-down conversion rate. UH also racked up six sacks for its highest total since a 2016 road win at San Jose State.
In the end, UH held Nevada to opponent season-lows in points (14), total offense (236), pass completions and yards (6, 112), and first downs (14).
Offensively, UH gained a season-high 136 yards on the ground and got a solid all-around effort from
Brayden Schager who tossed for 203 yards and two touchdowns while matching a career-high in rushing with 49 yards. Both of his touchdown passes went to
Pofele Ashlock who set a new career high with nine catches.
Matthew Shipley proved to be a bright spot on special teams, hitting a career-high 50-yard field goal in the second quarter, while replicating the feat in the fourth quarter to help ice the game. He became the first UH player to nail multiple 50-yard field goals in a game.
UH now returns home for a Veteran's Day weekend matchup against nationally-ranked and conference-leading Air Force. Kickoff for the match-up between the Rainbow Warriors and No. 17 Falcons is 6 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 11.
