HONOLULU — The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team kept pace with Washington deep into the third quarter before the Huskies broke away to hand the Rainbow Wahine a 58-41 loss in the finale of the Rainbow Wahine Showdown on Sunday at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.
The Rainbow Wahine (2-5) trailed 25-23 at halftime and were within three with three minutes left in the third period. But Washington (7-0) closed the quarter with a seven-point run and built on the lead in the fourth to capture the tournament title.
UH guard
MeiLani McBee opened the game with back-to-back 3-pointers and connected twice more in the second half to help keep the 'Bows within striking distance and finished with a team-high 12 points. Guard
Lily Wahinekapu added nine points and guard
Olivia Davies hit two 3-pointers to finish with seven points off the bench.
Washington's Dalayah Daniels led the Huskies with 19 points on 7-for-11 shooting and Sayvia Sellers added 10 points.
Washington, which entered the evening averaging 80 points per game, shot 46% from the field overall and went 8-for-13 (61.5%) in the third quarter.
Much of UH's offense came from long range with eight of 13 field goals coming from behind the arc and 32 of 47 total attempts.
McBee opened the scoring with a 3-pointer and hit another from the corner to give UH a 6-2 lead. Washington answered with back-to-back 3-pointers to take its first lead of the game and Wahinekapu drained another from long range to push UH back ahead 9-8.
Washington led 15-12 after the first quarter and opened up a 22-14 cushion before UH went on a 7-0 run. UH center
Brooklyn Rewers sparked the run with a 3-pointer from the top, and Davies launched a shot that hit of the backboard then off the front of the rim before falling for another 3.
UW went without a field goal for mre than six minutes and UH tied it up at 23-23 when Wahinekapu got a runner in the lane to drop with 14 seconds left in the half. Washington answered with a long outlet leading to a layup to give the Huskies a 25-23 at halftime.
McBee's third 3-pointer brought UH to within a point at the 7:55 mark of the third quarter and Davies' second brought to UH 34-31. But the 6-foot-4 Daniels scored inside, Jayda Noble hit a 3-pointer and Sellers scored just before the buzzer to send Washington into the fourth quarter with a 43-33 lead.
Daniels and Sellers accounted for all of Washington's scoring in the fourth quarter and the Huskies. McBee's fourth 3-pointer cut UH's deficit to 46-38 with 7:27 left, but Daniels answered with a layup and Sellers hit a 3 and the Huskies pulled away.
In Sunday's early game, Idaho State defeated Air Force 55-52. UH, Idaho State and Air Force all went 1-2 in the tournament with Washington going 3-0 during its weekend on O''ahu.
UH will close a six-game homestand on Dec. 3 against San Jose State in the first game of a doubleheader SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center. The Rainbow Wahine and Spartans meet at 2 p.m. with UH's men's basketball team facing Central Arkansas at 5.
