Rainbow Wahine Trounce Vulcans In Exhibition Action

HONOLULU — The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team rode a hot start to a 67-39 win over Hawai'I Hilo in an intra-state exhibition game on Wednesday at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.

The Rainbow Wahine went on a 22-0 run in the first quarter with four 3-pointers to take command against the Vulcans in the dress rehearsal a week before the regular-season opener at No. 15 Stanford.

MeiLani McBee led a balanced scoring effort with 13 points -  including four of the team's eight  three-pointers - while also adding six rebounds. Freshman post player Vivienne Berrett chipped in 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the floor. All but one of the 11 players who saw action on the evening got in the scoring column.

The Vulcans scored first and the Rainbow Wahine missed their first four shots then went 9-for-10 with four 3-pointers to fuel the decisive 22-0 run.Olivia Davies, who missed most of last season due to injury, drained the game's first two 3-pointers on her first two touches coming off the bench, while McBee hit another to prompt a Vulcans timeout.

The Rainbow Wahine led 22-5 after the first quarter and took a 37-17 lead into halftime after the teams played close to even in the second period.

The 'Bows took care of the rock, committing just seven turnovers, while forcing 22 UH HIlo turnovers and snagging 11 steals. UH also held the Vulcans to just 14-of-51 (28 percent) shooting on the night.

The Rainbow Wahine will open the regular season on the road with games at national power Stanford (Nov. 8) and at Santa Clara (Nov. 11) before returning home for the Bank of Hawaii Classic on Nov. 17 and 19.
