KĀ'ANAPALI, Maui – The University of Hawai'i men's golf team continued its impressive showing at the Kā'anapali Classic Collegiate Invitational with a second round 278 for a program-best 551 total following Friday's second round at Royal Kā'anapali.
The Rainbow Warriors bested their previous low 36-hole score of 556 set at the 2013 Aloha @ Hawai'i Invitational at Turtle Bay Resort on the North Shore of O'ahu. UH currently sits in a tie for sixth place with Georgia.
Liberty continues to lead the team standings at 534, five strokes better than ninth-ranked East Tennessee State and 14
th-ranked Oklahoma (539). North Florida (545) is fourth followed by San Jose State (546).
Three of UH's five team members shot under par on Friday led by
Josh Hayashida, who carded 4-under 67 and is tied for 12
th place at 7-under 135 to lead the Rainbow Warriors. After bogeying his first two holes, the sophomore from Mililani, O'ahu recorded seven birdies and one bogey over his final 16 holes.
Blaze Akana fired 3-under 68 and is tied for 19
th place at 5-under 137 while Kole Irei posted his second straight 2-under 69 and is tied for 24
th at 4-under 138. After a team-best 67 in Thursday's opening round,
Garrett Takeuchi shot 74 and is tied for 55
th at 1-under 141.
Freshman
Dane Watanabe is tied for 109
th after a second round 77 for a 153 total.
ETSU's Mats Ege and Liberty's Josh Ryan share the second round lead at 12-under 130 while Oklahom's Luke Kluver and North Florida's Robbie Higgins are one stroke back.
Four other Rainbow Warriors are competing as individuals.
Tyler Ogawa shot the low round of the day for a Hawai'i golfer with a career-low 5-under 66 and is tied for 55
th place at 1-under 141. The Honolulu native went 6-under on the track's front nine which included an eagle on the par-5 No. 9 hole.
Isaiah Kanno fired 2-under 69 and is tied for 57
th at even par 142.
James Whitworth is tied for 82
nd at 146 after a 76 on Friday while Maui native
Anson Cabello followed his opening round 72 with a 75 and is tied for 88
th at 147.
The tournament concludes with the third and final round on Saturday with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
