Rainbow Wahine Roll To Sweep Of UC Riverside

HONOLULU — The University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team's made its lone home match in a three-week stretch a quick one with a 25-19, 25-18, 25-11 sweep of UC Riverside in Saturday's Big West match at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.
 
Hawai'i senior middle blocker Amber Igiede put away a match-high 18 kills and the Rainbow Wahine (15-6, 8-2 Big West) improved to 31-0 in the all-time series with the Highlanders (4-18, 3-7) in 92 minutes on the court.
 
Igiede hit .556 on her match-high 27 attempts, posting double-figure kills for the 18th time in 21 matches this season, and was in on a match-high four blocks. Fellow middle blocker Kennedi Evans added eight kills in 15 attacks to hit .400 and outside hitter Paula Guersching finished with six kills in 11 attempts with one error.
 
UH sophomore Caylen Alexander finished with five kills and put away No. 500 for her career with her second kill of the match.
 
UH setter Kate Lang distributed 32 assists in directing a UH attack that hit a collective .388 and the Rainbow Wahine matched their second highest hitting percentage of the season. The 'Bows closed out the match by hitting .480 in the third set with 14 kills and two errors on 25 attacks and converted on 11 of 12 sideout opportunities (91%).
 
Libero Tayli Ikenaga anchored the UH floor defense with 14 digs, her fourth straight double-figure performance.
 
After UCR broke out to a 4-1 lead in the opening set, the Rainbow Wahine took command with an 8-1 run and opened up a 9-5 lead on Igiede's third kill.  The 'Bows extended the lead to 15-8 at the technical timeout, hitting .474 to that point to UCR's .000. The Highlanders would get no closer than five the rest of the way and UH earned set point at 24-17 on a kill by Guersching. UCR survived the next two points before Igiede put away her sixth kill of the set.
 
Igiede had three kills in a 6-1 UH run early in the second set and the Rainbow Wahine again opened up a a 15-8 lead. UCR closed to 20-16 before UH closed the set on a 5-2 run closing it out with a kill on a slide by Evans.
 
UH senior Kendra Ham and freshmen Tali Hakas and Stella Adeyemi started the third set in the pin hitter positions. Ham landed UH's first two aces of the match, the second giving UH a 13-7 lead. Igiede again helped give UH control of the set with four kills in a 6-1 run, twice hammering overpasses.
 
The Rainbow Wahine closed the match on an 8-0 run that included a kill and an ace from Alexander. Setter Jackie Matias ended a rally with a tip into the middle of the court,
Colby Lane's second career ace gave UH match point at 24-11, and a UCR attack error ended the match.
 
The Rainbow Wahine head back on the road to face CSUN on Oct. 27 and CSU Bakersfield on Oct. 28.
