Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Titans Turns Back Rainbow Warriors in Overtime

FULLERTON, Calif.-- The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team dropped its first Big West game this season and saw its seven-game win streak snapped with a 79-72 overtime loss to Cal State Fullerton Saturday night at Titan Gym. UH fell to 12-4 overall and 3-1 in the Big West with its first setback in a month.

UH rallied from an 12-point first-half deficit and a nine-point hole at the break, capped by Noel Coleman's game-tying three-pointer with 2.1 second left to force the extra period. But the Titans (9-7, 3-1) scored 19 points in overtime -- including 15 from the free throw line -- to ultimately pull away.

It was a rare setback at Titan Gym for the 'Bows who had lost just twice in 10 previous visits. Jalen Harris scored a game-high 24 points and Fullerton secured the win by converting 33 of 41 attempts from the line.

Bernardo da Silva led UH with 18 points and added seven rebounds before fouling out with 3:26 left in overtime. Noel Coleman poured in 16 points and drained three of his four three-point attempts. JoVon McClanahan (11) and Beon Riley (11) also finished in double-figures, while Samuta Avea scored nine second-half points to fuel UH's comeback.

The 'Bows shot 58 percent after intermission to get back into the game, but were ultimately undone by a season-high 22 turnovers, and a slew of missed free throws (18-of-27).

In the first half, Fullerton used a 14-2 run to take a double-digit lead before holding a 31-22 lead at the break as UH struggled offensively (35 percent shooting, 10 turnovers). However UH turned it around quickly out of the locker room. The 'Bows went on an 17-6 run to begin the second half and took its first lead since the game's opening minutes when Coleman drilled a three-pointer to put the 'Bows up 39-37 with 12:30 left.

It would be a tight game the rest of regulation. The Titans led by six points with under three minutes left and by five with just a minute to go. But UH stuck around and trailing 60-57 with 12.6 seconds left, gained possession of the ball. Coleman came off a screen and calmly drained a three-pointer from the wing to tie the game with 2.1 seconds left. The game went into overtime once Harris' ensuing half-court heave bounced off the rim at the buzzer.

UH held the Titans to just 36 percent shooting in the second half. But once in overtime Fullerton regained its aggression. The team's exchanged buckets to start the extra period, but once da Silva fouled out with 3:26 left, Fullerton went on to score seven straight points and never looked back.

The Rainbow Warriors now return home for a pair of games at SimpliFi Arena, beginning with a matchup against defending regular-season champions Long Beach State on Saturday, Jan. 14. Tipoff is 7:00 p.m. HT.
