WILSON, N.C. – The top-ranked University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team completed its three-match road trip through the state of North Carolina with a straight-set win over Barton, 25-11, 25-19, 25-14, Saturday at the Wilson Gymnasium.
The Rainbow Warriors (7-0) remained undefeated on the year and did so with a brand new starting lineup while resting most of their starters. Redshirt freshman
Cole Ottmar made his UH debut at outside hitter and finished with eight kills, four digs, and two blocks. Sophomore
Kurt Nusterer made his first career start and tallied seven kills in eight errorless attempts, along with one ace and three blocks.
Normal starting libero
Brett Sheward started at setter and recorded 34 assists and led the team to a .429 hitting percentage. Opposite
Alaka'i Todd led the team with career-highs in kills (13), attempts (22), digs (8) and hitting percentage (.455) while backup outside hitter Kāna'i Akana added six kills, hitting .556. Libero
'Eleu Choy also made his first career start and finished with six digs and four assists.
In addition, outside hitter
Filip Humler made his first appearance this season and tallied one kills, one ace and one dig.
Brandon Johnson led the Bulldogs (0-5) with eight kills and three aces.
UH out-hit Barton .429 to .023 and recorded a season-high nine blocks. Hawai'i did not record its first attack error until its 31
st attempt, which occurred in the second set.
The Rainbow Warriors return to Honolulu for a bye week before traveling back to the mainland for a two-match series at Stanford, Feb. 10-11 in Stanford, Calif.
