LAS VEGAS – The Hawai'i men's and women's swimming and diving teams capped off a solid opening day of competition Friday at UNLV with another school record in the women's 200 free relay.
The relay squad of
Laticia Transom, Gabby Scudamore,
Holly Nelson and
Anna Friedrich broke their own program record in the event with a 1:29.53 to win the relay by more than four seconds. Transom opened with a 22.39 followed by Scudamore's 22.50 and a 22.05 from Nelson, before Friedrich anchored with a 22.59 to lower their previous record that was set at SMU in November by .10 seconds.
The Rainbow Wahine won four other events on the day, starting with a victory in the 400 medley relay in 3:36.46 by Transom, Nelson, Scudamore and
Kathryn Ivanov. Ivanov also claimed a victory in the 100 breaststroke with a mark of 1:01.58 while
Dorottya Dobos finished first in the 100 back with a 55.53. UH went 1-2-3 in the 100 free, led by Transom winning with a 48.86, followed by Scudamore with a 49.93 to move into a tie for 10th in UH history and Nelson with a 50.88.
Isabella Plantz led the way for the Wahine dive squad, becoming the third different UH women's diver to put up an NCAA Zone E mark with a 295.50 in the 3-meter competition.
Gonzalez led the way in the men's 3-meter competition, putting up the 10th-best mark in program history with a season-best 373.35 to build on the NCAA Zone E standard he achieved earlier this year. Pennington came in close behind with a 365.95.
The two Rainbow Warrior divers finished 1-2 in the men's 1-meter competition, with Pennington coming in first with a mark of 338.95, followed by Gonzalez close behind with a 331.65.
In the pool, the Rainbow Warriors opened the day with a season-best time in the 400 medley relay, as
Ian Venter,
Tomer Goldfaden,
Jordan Meacham and
Mario Surkovic teamed up to swim a 3:15.37.
Hawai'i wraps up action in Vegas on Saturday with the final session of swimming beginning at 8 a.m. HT.
