Men's Basketball Clashes With UCSB For Big West Supremacy

HONOLULU — The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team (15-5, 6-2 Big West) hosts a pair of games this week, beginning with a crucial Big West showdown versus UC Santa Barbara (16-3, 7-1) on Thursday, Jan. 26. Tipoff is 7:00 p.m. at the SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center. 

Just one game separates UH and the first-place Gauchos. The Rainbow Warriors look to move up the league standings while extending an eight-game home win streak. The 'Bows will do so on a Throwback Thursday in which they will don retro uniforms inspired by the UH teams of the mid-1970s. Fans are encouraged to wear their favorite retro gear.   PROMOTIONSHawaiian Airlines is the sponsor on Thursday's "Alumni Night" and will distribute free men's basketball roster cards and Hawaiian Airlines calendar posters prior to the game at Gate A, and award over 30k HawaiianMiles during halftime. The UH Men's Basketball team will don special Adidas retro uniforms and fans are encouraged to wear your favorite UH retro gear on Thursday. Raising Cane's is the sponsor of Saturday's "Chinese New Years Celebration" and will distribute 500 Koozies prior to the game at Gate A, and award great prizes throughout the night. Fans are encouraged to wear red, symbolizing the color of joy, blessing of happiness, and good fortune in celebration of the Chinese New Year. The Majestic Culture and the Arts Association invite fans for picture taking with the Lion Dance group from 6 p.m. - 7 p.m. located on the concourse level (Ewa Side) of the Stan Sheriff Center and they will perform a traditional Lion Dance at halftime. The first 300 fans at each Big West Conference home game will receive a set of Rainbow Warrior trading cards, courtesy of Waikiki Malia by OUTRIGGER.

'BOW BITS
  • For the second straight game UH will face the first-place team in the Big West when it host UC Santa Barbara. Just one game separates the top four teams in the Big West standings.
  • UH is coming off a 67-63 win at UC Riverside that knocked the Highlanders off the top perch. UCSB moved into first with its third straight win, a 76-58 home victory over CSU Bakersfield.
  • UCSB leads the Big West and is 11th nationally in field goal percentage (.494). UH leads the Big West and ranks 21st nationally in field goal percentage defense (.394).
  • The teams split last season's series, including a 65-62 home win by UH last January in which the 'Bows rallied from a 19-point deficit.
  • UH will wear special throwback uniforms on Thursday, inspired by the Rainbow Warrior teams of the mid-1970s.   
  • The 'Bows seek their ninth straight home win, which would be the team's longest such streak since UH won 13 straight from February 2004 to January 2005.
  • JoVon McClanahan has scored in double-digits in all eight Big West games this year (14.8 ppg).
  • Four Rainbow Warriors starters (Noel Coleman - 14.2 ppg, Kamaka Hepa - 10.7, JoVon McClanahan - 10.6, Bernardo da SIlva - 10.5) average double-digits in scoring with a fifth player, Samuta Avea, on the cusp at 9.8 ppg.
  • The UH starters have accounted for 82 percent of the team's scoring this year, including 88 percent (474 of 537) in league play.
  • In conference games, Bernardo da Silva leads the Big West in blocks (1.8 bpg), ranks third in FG percentage (58.0%) and is fourth in rebounding (8.4).
  • UH is one of only 10 teams nationally that has yet to surrender 80 or more points in a game this year.
  • UH committed just nine turnovers at UC Riverside to improve to 10-0 on the season when committing 11 turnovers or less.
  • Noel Coleman has drained 27 straight free throws in the last five games and has converted 38 of his last 39 attempts dating back to UH's Big  West opener vs. UC Davis.
  • The school record for consecutive FTs made is 34 by Brocke Stepteau (2018-19).
