Wahinekapu Lifts Rainbow Wahine To Bounceback Win Over UC Riverside

HONOLULU– The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team concluded a four-game, eight-day stretch with a 55-51 win over visiting UC Riverside Saturday night inside SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.

The Highlanders (4-11, 2-7) have lost four in a row after picking up back-to-back wins against CSUN and UC San Diego earlier in the month. For the Rainbow Wahine (7-10, 5-3) it was the seventh straight win over UCR.

Sophomore guard Lily Wahinekapu stuffed the stat sheet on Saturday, leading the Rainbow Wahine with 14 points, a career-high 10 rebounds, four assists and four steals. The sophomore guard helped secure the win by scoring 10 straight points for UH in the fourth quarter after the Highlanders pulled within one point. Kallin Spiller chipped in 10 points and seven rebounds to contribute to UH's advantage inside.

Two nights after a tough overtime loss to first-place UC Irvine, UH grinded out a win over the Highlanders to stay on the winning side of the ledger in the Big West. The Rainbow Wahine took the lead late in the first and maintained it the rest of the way in a relatively close game throughout.

UH trailed 12-10 with 2:06 on the clock in the first quarter, and proceeded to answer by going on an 18-6 run to go up 28-18 with two minutes left to go in the second quarter. The Highlanders pulled within seven, 30-23 at the half.

The Rainbow Wahine took a 44-40 lead into the final quarter. UCR drilled a three-pointer to make it a 44-43 in the opening moments of the final stanza. But that's when Wahinekapu took over, scoring all of UH's points in a game-sealing 10-2 run.

UH continued its struggles from the free throw line (9-of-18) and from behind the arc (2-of-11), but absolute dominated inside to clinch the win. The 'Bows out-scored the Highlanders 38-18 in the paint en route to a 48 percent shooting night. UH held the Highlanders to just 37 percent shooting and out-rebounded them, 36-27.

UH will go back on the road next week to visit UC Santa Barbara on Thursday, Jan. 26 and CSU Bakersfield on Saturday, Jan. 28.
