Men’s Basketball Takes Down UC Riverside For Key Road Win

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team picked up a pivotal road win by knocking off first-place UC Riverside, 67-63, Saturday afternoon at the SRC Arena. With the win the Rainbow Warriors (15-5, 6-2 Big West) stayed in the top mix of the league standings and snapped the Highlanders (14-7, 7-2) six-game win streak.

JoVon McClanahan scored a team-high 19 points, including a pair of free throws with 9.7 seconds left to help seal the win. McClanahan drained 9-of-10 free throws overall. Bernardo da Silva poured in 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting with all but four of his points coming in the second half. He also added a team-high high eight rebounds. Noel Coleman added 10 for the Rainbow Warriors.

Two days after a road loss at UC Irvine, the 'Bows bounced back in a big way, leading for the majority, including by as many as 13 points before holding off a Highlander rally. UH held UCR to just 32 percent shooting for the game.

UH led for the near entirety of the first half. McClahanan scored 13 of his points in the first frame and UH held the Highlanders to just 29 percent shooting to take a 33-29 advantage into the locker room.

UCR took a brief lead, 34-33, in the opening minute of the second half. But UH scored the next six points to take grasp of the lead for good. A Coleman three-pointer gave UH its biggest margin of 13, 63-50, with 6:46 left.

The Highlanders made one final push as a 13-2 run made it 65-63 with 1:30 remaining. UCR actually had a chance to tie the game or take the lead with less than 20 seconds left,  but Jamal Hartwell missed a three-pointer from the top of the key and Cameron Flynn missed a point-blank layup after an offensive rebound. UH rebounded Flynn's miss and McClanahan drained two free throws with 9.7 second left for the final score.

UCR stayed in the game with their play on the glass. The Highlanders out-rebounded the 'Bows 50-37 and grabbed 25 offensive rebounds, leading to 21 second-half points. But UH played their signature defense, shot 45 percent from the field and turned the ball over just nine times to win for the 10th time in the last 12 contests.

The game Saturday concluded a stretch of four games in eight days for the 'Bows who now return home for a pair of games, beginning with another top-tier Big West opponent in UC Santa Barbara on Thursday, Jan. 26. Tipoff is 7:00 p.m. HT at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.
