Men's Tennis Drops Road Loss at UCLA

LOS ANGELES, Calif.—The University of Hawai'i men's tennis team (0-3) fell at UCLA (1-0), 7-0 on Friday afternoon. The Rainbow Warriors  battled all day, but their efforts did not translate to a win in the lineup at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.

After dropping the first doubles match, the 'Bows battled their way back. On the No. 2 court, UH's Kilian Maitre and Axel Labrunie defeated UCLA's Timothy Li and Alexander Hoogmartens by a break, 6-4. The doubles point hinged on the No. 1 match between Hawai'i's Andre Ilagan and Karl Collins and Patrick Zahraj and Giacomo Revelli. Ilagan/Collins were trailing 5-4 but  rallied to knot the score at 5-5 and later 6-6. In the deciding tie-breaker, the Bruins went up early, 4-2 before UH knotted the score at 5-5. UCLA held on for the last two points to edge out Ilagan/Collins, 7-6 (5).

In singles, UCLA kept their momentum rolling as they raced out to a 3-0 lead with wins at No. 4 and No. 1. On Court No. 1, UH's 41st-ranked Ilagan kept pace with 83rd-ranked Hoogmartens early, but eventually fell in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1 to clinch the match. The Bruins then clinched the match with Azuma Visaya's 6-3, 6-3 win over Andy Hernandez playing at No. 5. The final three matches all went to three sets. Both Labrunie brothers won their first sets. At No. 3, Lucas Labrunie fell to Aadarsh Trripathi, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1, while Axel Labrunie pushed 89th-ranked Revelli right until the end, with all three sets decided by just one break. Revelli won, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5. On the No. 6 court, UH's Maitre bounced back after falling in the first set to force a third but UCLA's Jeffrey Fradkin prevailed, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4.

Hawai'i will return home for a few days before embarking on their second-straight roadtrip as they head to Las Vegas, Nev. where they will take on both UNLV and UC Riverside on Friday, Jan. 27, Weber State on Saturday, Jan. 28, and New Mexico State on Sunday, Jan. 29.
