Rainbow Wahine Drop Heartbreaker at Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Hawai'i women's soccer team kept unbeaten Portland off the board until the closing minutes of Sunday's nonconference match, but surrendered a late goal in a 1-0 loss.

The Rainbow Wahine (2-2) fought off a steady barrage of chances for the Pilots all throughout the second half, but Cally Togiai finally broke through for Portland (4-0-2) with a goal in the 86th minute. Hawai'i was out-shot 24-5, including a 19-3 difference in the second half, while the Pilots also had 14 corner kicks.

Goalkeeper Lauren Marquez made a handful of stellar plays prior to the Togiai goal to keep the match scoreless. The fifth-year senior finished with a season-high four saves, including a pair of standout efforts in the 53rd and 71st minutes on shot attempts at the top of the net.

Hawai'i mounted one last push in the final seconds to try to tie the match up, but Mia Foster's long-distance shot attempt was saved with less than a minute to play.

UH's back line held strong throughout the first half, fending off a number of chances by the Pilots and limiting quality looks at goal. Portland out-shot Hawai'i in the opening period, 5-2, but none of the five shot attempts allowed were on goal as goalkeeper Lauren Marquez remained relatively unchallenged at the halfway point.

The 'Bows also created a handful of good chances offensively in the opening 45 minutes. Amber Gilbert went on a couple of good runs down the left side, the second of which resulted in the only Hawai'i shot attempt of the first half that was put on frame and saved by UP goalie Bre Norris in the 15th minute.  Kelci Sumida also got a look at goal, delivering a shot attempt on frame in the closing minutes of the first half.

The Rainbow Wahine conclude their road trip to Portland with a matchup against Portland State Thursday at 10 a.m. HT.
