HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i baseball team lost 5-3 on a late comeback to Cal Poly Thursday night at Les Murakami Stadium.
The Rainbow Warriors (27-23, 18-10) fall out of contention for second place in the Big West with the loss but will look to win the next two games to keep the series win streak alive. The Mustangs (36-20, 21-7) extended their win streak to 12 games.
The 'Bows jumped on Cal Poly early with a single from graduate center fielder
Cole Cabrera that opened up the ballgame. Sophomore third baseman
Kyson Donahue singled through the right side on the next at-bat to move Cabrera to third. Junior right fielder
Matt Wong stepped in and hit a chopper through the right side, and scored the first run of the inning. With two out and two on, junior first baseman
Jacob Igawa hit a ball that seemed not to want to come down; it eventually landed at the base of the left-field wall and allowed two more runs to score as UH went up 3-0 in the first.
The Mustangs struck back in the second inning after they managed to load the bases, and a single drove in the first run. On the next at-bat, Hawai'i got out of the bases-loaded jam on a 5-2-3 double-play.
After six innings of scoreless baseball, Cal Poly got to the UH bullpen. The Mustangs got their first two batters aboard before Lopez singled to right-center to get their offense going. The next batter, Doss, grounded out but scored the run from third for the inning's second run. Two batters later, Borgogno capped off the four-run inning with a two-run home run to left to take a 5-3 lead in the top of the eighth.
The Cal Poly bullpen shut down the 'Bows after a three-run first inning en route to their comeback win.
Graduate pitcher
Andy Archer in what was probably his final appearance as a Rainbow Warrior, went five and two-thirds, allowed one earned run on five hits and struck out five. Junior reliever
Dalton Renne (4-3) was credited with the loss as he allowed three runs in the eighth to give up the lead.
Wong and Cabrera led the Rainbow Warriors with two hits each, while Igawa's double to the wall led the team in RBIs.
The Rainbow Warriors return Friday at 6:35 p.m. HT as
Blaze Koali'i Pontes is scheduled to go for his sixth win of the year.
